SustInAfrica project consist of seven work packages.

WP1: Baseline analysis & monitoring system’s design of West & North African farming systems
Lead partner: Lisbon School of Economics and Management (ISEG)

The objectives of WP1 are to gather knowledge by combining systematic review of scientific and grey literature, surveys, participation, application of diverse disciplinary quantitative and qualitative research tools, as well as tacit knowledge integration providing all kind of innovations, to guide the implementation of trials (WP3), education/training (WP4), and exploitation (WP5).

WP2: Smart farming technologies for plant production
Lead partner: Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB)

The overall objective of WP2 is to conceptualise and develop technical tools and solutions to monitor and manage plant performance for sustainable plant production intensification in Africa. In a general sense, we aim to develop a concept for promoting smart, open, and affordable monitoring technologies opting to improve plant production, plant health, water management, and the delivery of ecosystem services.

WP3: Targeted design & implementation of demonstration trials for resilient & sustainable
agricultural production & delivery of ecosystem services
Lead partner: University of Cape Coast (UCC)

The overall objective of WP3 is to test sustainable and resilient farming methods and systems (e.g. agro-ecological methods, agroforestry, smart or organic farming) in 13 agro-ecological zones in West and North Africa. In the meantime the identified systems and practices will be assessed to identify the potential of ecosystems services to secure the long-term sustainability of the preferred farming methods and systems.

WP4: Education & training approaches to sustainable agriculture in Africa
Lead partner: Nile University (NU)

The overall objective of WP4 is to assure the transfer and multiplication of the lessons learnt and of scientific output acquired during and after SustInAfrica by developing sustainable agricultural key competences among relevant stakeholders based on cohesive knowledge and tailored intensification scenarios designed and approved by SustInAfrica (translation and transfer of knowledge gathered in WPs 1, 2, 3 and 5).

WP5: Sustainability, replicability, and exploitation of successful practices
Lead partner: Self Help Africa (SHA)

The overall objective of WP5 is to ensure the lasting impact of African-EU joint research at local level by screening the methods, technologies, and solutions developed by SustInAfrica for climate resilience, impact on gender, nutrition and the environment, and the potential for replicability and scaling before developing exploitation strategies, which will include costed business plans for commercially viable technologies and extension strategies for Public Goods.

WP6: Communication and dissemination
Lead partner: Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke)

The overall objective of WP6 is to communicate and disseminate SustInAfrica results and products developed and tested in WPs 2, 3, 4 & 5. This WP supports and facilitates communication with African and national target groups, including stakeholders (soil and farmer organisations, industry), policymakers/institutions, other research groups and media. Dissemination of research and development outcomes supports distribution and upscaling of technologies developed in WPs 2, 3 & 4 in SustInAfrica.

WP7: Project coordination and administration
Lead partner: Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke)

The scientific coordination and overall management of the project will benefit from the project management expertise of Luke, together with the experience of the WP leaders. This WP coordinates all tasks that relate to operational, technical and financial management.
